Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: Wonderful old Irish Wolfhound with their typical laid back temperament. No previous problems with stomach or digestive issues at all. In very nice condition for his age but came from long lived lines. Bloated/torsioned and was PTS due to age and poor prognosis. I feel it was age related. 3/23/2007
Additional comments I also have three female Great Danes. All have been gastropexied because of the high incidences of bloat/torsion in the Danes. 3/23/2007

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: This was a Newfoundland who bloated/torsioned. He had episodes of what I would describe as "spitting up" much as a baby would. He grew out of it when out of puppyhood. He was a more "up" in temperament than is typical in this breed. Was PTS after discovery of too much dead stomach tissue and spleen was also torsioned and dying. 3/23/2007
Additional comments Also lost the Irish Wolfhound who should be entered above. My three Danes and one Newf are all gastropexied. I decided to have all dogs at risk to this ugly thief pexied. Will investigate the less invasive techniques though. 3/23/2007

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: On the evening of the 25th, Enzo started to retch, unproductively. He has thrown up before and been fine. This time was different. I let him out back in case he did throw up and he just laid down in the grass. That is when I knew it was serious. He never lies down right away after going outside. I had read a lot about Danes before we got him, so I knew that bloat was a possibility, but you never think it will happen to YOUR baby…
I took him to the vet right away. If it wasn't bloat, i knew it was someting...He had surgery and is doing fine now. I am so thankful that we caught it early.

Stayed at E-vet over night for observation. Air was in sm. intestines, they wanted to make sure he could pass that easily. He passed that fine and we were called to pick him up.

I also forgot to give her lunch that day and so she got a *slightly* larger supper at 5:00p.m. and then showed initial discomfort at 8:30, was at the emergency clinic and diagnosed by 9:10. Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: The dog, an English Setter, had swallowed a 1 1/2 inch round piece of rubber chew toy. His stomach twisted 360 degrees and his spleen was 10 x its normal size. He had what was then "new" surgery to tack his stomach. He lived 5 months, then bloated again, didn't twist, but I thought it was best for him to put him down. 5/31/2007
Additional comments This dog had high strung temperament. I wonder if this contributed to his bloat. 5/31/2007

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: Our GS dog Storm had Hemangiosarcoma and was being treated with chemo therapy for this as well as being on Rimadyl of his hip dysplasia. He had been receiving chemo for about 6 weeks prior to the bloat/stomach twisting. Prior to this he was in good health and spirits all things considered. The night of the bloat he ate cooked rice and chicken. Prior to this he had been on Eukeneba Senior dry food for a year and prior to that chicken carcasses/chum/dry food. Can't remember if he was drinking more than normal. His diet had been changed a couple of week's prior to this. He became restless and was following me everywhere. When I went to bed he kept getting up as if not able to get comfortable. He didn't seem himself. We rushed him to the emergency vets and they thankfully operated on him. I would say two hours had passed by this time from when I first noticed his restlessness. He bounced back well from the operation. 5/31/2007
Additional comments I remember asking the vet nurse did the chemo contribute to the bloating and she said possibly. His stomach was attached to the side walls and at this point it was noted the cancer had spread to liver etc (we had thought it was caught in time) so we stopped the chemo and Stormy passed away 5 weeks later from the cancer but at least his last 5 weeks was quality compared to having 5 weeks of further chemo. Storm had eaten a lot of different foods over his life, travelled in a vehicle at various times for long periods and had been on Rimadyl on and off for 10 years of the 11. Never had problems with bloat prior to this. He was not the most active dog due to his hip dysplasia. Hope this helps in demystifying this horrible medical affliction. 5/31/2007

This has occured about 8 times in the last two years. We feed Hills science diet perscription from vets, along with a gas X gel, a charcoal pill and a cisapride prescription pill three times a day, and she still bloats. 5/31/2007
