Thank You for participating in this survey. We hope that we will be able to collect enough data to show whether or not there is a significant rise in Bloat during the week of a full moon. We are also hopeful that this will help people who have had multiple cases of Bloat with a dog or dogs to be mindful of the Lunar Phases and perhaps be able to prevent it with minor changes in daily routines or just to be more alert during the lunar phase.
We will be posting the results of the survey on a regular basis. Please allow a day or 2 for your answers and story to be posted here. Also, please send the link to the survey to anyone that you know who has had a dog that suffered from Bloat. ALL BREEDS WELCOME. Let's get the word out!
If you do not wish for your full name or e-mail to be posted, please contact me at eastwooddanes@yahoo.com and I will be happy to edit that information out before posting it.

Take me back to the survey to fill out the form again for another dog.

Louis’ owners had been away for 10 days on vacation and picked him up earlier that day from the dog sitters. Louis was staying with a friend who had a Dane and liked the company of the pretty Fawn. Louis grew up with a Fawn girl and when his owners had to move to Japan the 2 were separated when they were re-homed.
Louis has been a RAW fed dog his entire life. He had lost a little weight so he was being fed Satin Balls to help put some weight back on. Satin Balls contain things that a RAW fed dog would not normally get like Total cereal, Molasses, Wheat Germ, Flax meal, gelatin. He was fed 2 Satin Balls about the size of baseballs 45 minutes before he Bloated. Louis was torsed and died at the Emergency clinic.

The only circumstance was that her dam had been staying with us for a few weeks and had returned home the day before. She had stayed here many times before so this was not unusual.

Barron had been BARF-fed for over 2 years -- by-the-book Billinghurst -- and still bloated and torsed. BUT! I think the vet was astonished that he sustained relatively little damage from the torsion and came through the surgery so well. Before the doc to him into surgery, she had me tell him goodbye -- just didn't feel good about a dog his age (3 mos shy of his 11th bday) being able to sustain that kind of stomach damage. So, while BARF didn't prevent bloat, I feel pretty confident that it's the reason for his great health and that he came through the bloat/torsion so miraculously. He recovered quickly and completely; however, developed megasphagus about a year later. We managed it for 2+ years before we had to let him go due to complications of mega & sever arthritis in his spine.

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: We had just come home from the Vets with Harley and we ourselves had been under some stress as my husband was waiting to get the okay to go back to work after having been out of work for 7 weeks due to a brain abscess. She drank some water and then had to wear an E collar to prevent her from licking and chewing on her leg that had stitches from a lump removal. She hated the collar and I believe that contributed to the bloat, besides all the stress I think she must have got from us. She was real quiet and really showed no signs til she tried to vomit and she raised her back so high, like I had never seen before. I knew it was bloat. We rushed her to the ER and she walked in and then collapsed on the table and they couldn't bring her back. Her heart just gave out.

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: Zeus had been boarded for 2 days with his German Shepherd sister, Tessa. We picked them up at about 4 pm on Friday, August 5th, 2005. When we got home, Zeus was thirsty and drank a lot of water. Within 30 minutes, he was heaving at the back door. I felt his stomach, and it felt tight. We immediately took him to the emergency vet, where blood work and X-ray revealed he was indeed suffering from GDV. Thankfully, he survived the surgery and is still with us today. Zeus was 3 weeks shy of turning 4 years old when this happened.

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: We spent a cool Sunday evening with doggy friends like we have many times before. No excess activity, no pushy dogs, just a nice evening with nice dogs. I noticed that our Dane ate grass -- but she always does. They ate 1 hour after getting home and settled down for bed by 11 pm. She vomited at 2 am and we rushed her to the em vet. Lucky for us, they did immediate surgery and she survived.

She bloated on 4-4-04 at the age of 4yrs old. The emergency vet said she had less than 30% of coming thru surgery and even less than that of any kind of life afterward if she did survive.

When he bloated he was in the last stages of bone cancer and the day before the family was increased by one more Dane, a deaf/blind 10 month old female. He didn't seem the have any problem with her (Luna) being there but I noticed that he drank lots of water that afternoon. I had him put down because he would have died of the cancer before he recovered from the surgery if he had had it.

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: The first bloat experience with this dog was the most severe requiring emergency surgery & gastropexy. 2nd time was not as severe - no doubt due to the gastropexy performed the first time. The only thing I can think of in relation to the 1st incident is that the weather had changed from cool to hot very quickly. This has shown up as an indicator in other research. This dog also showed out of character aggression on the morning of the attack - before any other symptoms could be noticed. He was in full stage 2 bloat some 12 hours later. This also occurred with the 2nd attack which was clearly caused by the stress of being at a boarding kennel. Again he showed out of character aggression, which he had not displayed on previous occasions at this boarding kennel. Whether that is a pain response to early symptoms not obvious at the time, I am unsure at this point in time.

One of those things that once you see it you will never question if in Bloat again. Very obvious, that evening we had gone out so the dogs were fed later than normal and were left our in the kennel longer than normal. The local feed store had run out of their food and so had I so I used another brand to "get by" till delivery. The stress of change of routine and food I feel was too much for one of our dogs.
After observing the entire process at the vet, from tubing to surgery, I would personally never attempt tubing my animals myself. Too much damage can occur if done improperly. The strength in my boy made it necessary to put him under just to tube hime anyway.

Full Moon was 28th October 2004
Misty had forthe first and last times some dumplings added to her dinner that day.
She did have a form of epilepsy which took a long time to diagnose and had just started on phenobarbitone approximately a week before the bloat. Unfortunately the epilepsy was not diagnosed before she had her vaccination booster in the March before and this caused the 'episodes' to increase. She did have the operation, her stomach had twisted 4 times but she survived. She deteriorated after a few hours and as I had told the vet I did not want to prolong her life if she was going to suffer she died at 3.10am on 31st October. She was fed from a raised feed bowl at all times

My dog was listless and slightly panting that night. I am a mother hen so I took him to the emergency vet right away. My dog did not actually "BLOAT" until a couple hours after we got to the vet. Both were different. Noticed dane 1 drinking a lot, then trying to vomit. He did the praying I've read about but hubby didn't tell me that until after. I rushed him to the vet because he drooled and he never just looks at me and drools. He survived with no damage to the stomach just a slight bruise. Dane 1 bloated at night. Dane #2 stomach distended and vomited a small amount. I believe his spleen was bothering him the night before and when he vomited the next I think that made his stomach flip. Not sure if I wrote that correct. I do know what I mean though. He did have his enlarged spleen romoved but no damage to his stomach which was a relief. Dane 2 bloated during the day. My husband was home with dane 2 when he bloated because dane 1 just got out of the emergency vet and I didn't want him left alone. Dane 1 saved dane 2 because he bloated 3 days before. Dane 2 would have died I believe.

Merlin was rehomed with us at 4 1/2, he died aged 5yrs 7 months, he could be quite stressed at times and had really suffered over Guy Fawkes. The day he bloated was calm and ordinary.
Add any comments or suggestions you may have for this survey or website that might make it better:
What was the dog's normal food, Merlin was on Chappie complete which was soaked for 5 minutes before feeding (2 feeds per day), our current danes are both on tripe and biscuit, I would never ever feed complete again.

Our 2.5 y/o boy was fed a mixed breakfast of eggs, potatoes, beans etc(people food) then went outside and was chasing a chipmunk up a tree when his bloat occured. He made it through surgery quite well and we visited with him and walked him the following day but unfortuneately he was left alone that night and chewed the tape and IV out of his arm/paw and died on March 15th, 2000.

My first dane bloated 3 times. The third time he torsioned and he didn't survive after the operation. His first 2 bloats were in full moon time.

My second dane had 11 bloats (he never torsioned) and he is gone because the bloats destroied his spleen and pancreas. We determined that during the autopsy ( I wanted to know why he bloated so many times and we couldn't heal him ). Most of his bloats were during the full moon time. So fully I had 14 bloats ( for both danes) and 8 of them were "yes".

For me the first 2 bloats for every dane were more reliable for the research ( because after that the danes were already put un a big risk and the time was not so important) and all these 4 bloats happened in the full moon time.

We had just brought our GSD home from being boarded at a kennel. This woman completely separated him from our other dog, though she was told not too and put him in a area of the kennel that had no dogs in it what so ever. This completely stressed him out besides separateing him from his buddy he had known all his life. He did not eat regularly if at all while he as at the kennel, but we didn't know this we where not made aware of what had happened.

Gabriel was nine years old when he died of bloat/torsion. He did not appear to be stressed or off his feed at the time he bloated. He had been treated for an infection earlier in the year which responded to antibiotics. He had sired 2 daughters who bloated and torsed at a much younger age than he did. The daughter who was able to be saved underwent gastropexy--however she does have swallowing issues both before and after her bloat/torsion episode and needs to have a little water on her kibble to swallow it properly to this day.

My collie, JD, was a large (80 lb., 26" tall) male who was DEFINITELY not a nervous, excitable type of dog. He was outgoing, social, and happy. He did have a rather deep chest. His bloat occurred just after he had turned 3 years old. He *did* have some prior episodes of what the vets called "gas," but had ASSURED us that they were not "pre-bloat" episodes. I now believe they were WRONG, and that the episodes simply did not progress to torsion of the stomach until the last, fatal time.
Add any comments or suggestions you may have for this survey or website that might make it better:
No suggestions, but I find the premise very interesting, as my dog did indeed pass one day after the full moon's onset. I now wonder myself if there is a connection.

It was awful and very heartbreaking. We had no idea what was going on until we got him to the emergency vet hospital. We had finished opening presents that night at 8 by 9 Siber was leaning into me, then the unproductive vomit started, and he passed before 11. Very quick and unexpected.

Add any comments or suggestions you may have for this survey or website that might make it better: This whole idea is fascinating, and I believe it's accepted in psychiatric circles that there's a co-relation between the lunar cycles and human behaviour, so it's not as far-fetched as it might at first seem.

However, I do think that the way in which the survey is being conducted is likely to produce a result skewed in favour of the full moon theory. Owners who discover that their dog did indeed bloat during a full moon are going to say "Wow!" and click 'Submit' those who find it wasn't a full moon are much more likely to just shrug and surf on to the next site without sending in their form.

I wonder if a more accurate picture might be obtained by contacting someone such as Prof Larry Glickman of Purdue University, (http://www.dogstuff.info/beating_bloat_pflaumer.html)
who has already conducted extensive research into GDV. It might be interesting to assess his records in the light of your theory, and so produce a more balanced result.

Best of luck with it, anyway!

Feel free to enter your experience with Bloat here: Other circumstances = Lots of evidence of early bloat in his lines, paternal grandsire had sires at least a dozen dogs who bloated under the age of 3. Tonka was 2, by the way, when he bloated and died from complications/necrosis of the stomach.
Additional comments ADD A PLACE TO PUT THE AGE OF THE DOG!! It's very important, I think there is a HUGE difference between dogs who bloat later in life and those who bloat early--especially considering hereditary factors. Ive been doing research into the incidences of bloat in my breed and I am finding that with young bloaters there is a strong genetic component--particularly there are/were 2 very popular sires, Darq and Raja, around who dominate the gene pool of many dogs these days, and an overwhelming number of their offspring bloated young. In pedigrees that were doubled up on the sire or had both sires in them the statistics skyrocket. The younger bloating dogs seem to be doing it more violently, with less warning (no previous GI issues or gas, etc...), and seem to be dying from it more.

There was NO warning with Tonka, he was strong and vital until the day he died AND he had undergone homeopathy and was considered near "cured" from the vaccinosis issues he had displayed as a young puppy. 1/31/2007

The dr discussed the signs and to keep on the look out for the future. Thank goodness he did because while in our care our Akita bloated right before our eyes on Christmas Eve. We were able to get him to the hospital shortly after noticing the signs but not before his stomach turned. We were given the split decision of doing the emergency surgery or putting him to sleep. Because of his age and the quick response of getting him to the hospital we chose surgery. He's back at home doing fine and happy to be alive. 1/31/2007
