Our Experience with Surgical Breeding
using Frozen Semen.
I thought maybe others who are considering this type of breeding could benefit from the information
and video of the breeding.
This breeding was done via surgical implant using frozen semen. This is our first experience with this type of breeding and it went very well. Tricks heat cycle began on March 16TH and we did the first progesterone test on Saturday the 21st (day 5) and collecting blood samples daily there after. Some for progesterone testing and some for only checking LH. I will also add the cost to this so anyone who is considering a surgical implant breeding can get a ball park idea of what to expect. Some vets are less expensive then others. Mine is fairly average.

First day of season: Monday March 16th
1st progesterone test Saturday March 21st... Results:  .05
1st LH Blood draw: Sunday March 22nd
2nd draw Monday March 23rd
2nd progesterone Tuesday March 24th.... Results   .65
3rd progesterone Friday March 27th..... Results 3.2
4th Progesterone Sunday March 29th results 19.9 (I'm not convinced this number was accurate. )
Progesterone day of breeding: 22.9

When the progesterone results from Friday came in on Saturday morning, it showed things progressing as normal and at 3.2 we were getting close to ovulation which happens at 5.0 and likely happened on Saturday.
I picked up all of LH samples collected at my local vet and took them to Valporaiso Sunday morning. We drew blood for another progesterone test and ran LH surge for results. The surge occured on Wednesday. Everything is perfect and surgery was set for Tuesday morning March 31st at 10 AM.
Cost
Initial exam: $40.00
LH Draws 5 @ $15.00 $75.00
Progesterone test 4 @ $55.00 = $220.00
LH Witness 3 @ $65.50 = $196.50
Semen prep and evaluation = $41.80
Surgical Insemination Includes sedation, rimadyl = $265.90
Blood draw for last progesterone $11.00
TOTAL = $849.70

Stud fee and shipping of semen are not included in these cost. So as you can see, Surgical implant breeding comes with a pretty big price tag.  I took video of the surgery! See below!

The result of this breeding was 9 puppies!
